Shack Reels: Top 10 Sidekicks

Sometimes, heroes can do the job on their own. Other times, they need a little help from their friends. For this week's Top 10 video, we take a look at the 10 best sidekicks in video games.

Many heroes are strong characters on their own. But there are some heroes that are made better by their #2. Sidekicks can often help heroes be at their best. They often don't get their due, but the day wouldn't be saved without them. They matter, too.

So for this week's Top 10, Greg Burke checks out the Top 10 Sidekicks in video games. From the more recent BioShock Infinite to the far more classic video game franchises, each of these games feature heroes that just wouldn't get as much without a little help from their friends.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Did The Blob from Boy and his Blob make it?

Sadly, there were no jelly-bean munching blobs on the list. It also lacked crows, book store/shadow hunter assistants, demon mechanics, psychotic knife wielding gang members, dogs made of meat, floating skulls, pistol wielding post-apocalyptic occasional sniper-engineers with a large robot pet, the said large robot pet, assassins, talking sword computer world-brush things, security guards, flys (super or otherwise), potatoes, horses, spheres, and cubes.

That said, it was still a pretty good list and the inter-1cut bits during the countdown continue to improve, how far they've come from just repeating the same clip. Wish there had been a little more variety in the winner clips (for instance I really wished there had been a cut from Lucas Arts' Sam & Max Hit the Road), but most of them were quite good. Seriously Greg, while there's always room for improvement, you're doing a great job. Thank you.

Not only are the videos consistently getting better in production value, it is continually heartening to see the influence from the threads you start regarding the lists. Perhaps I just don't spend enough time away from Shacknews, but I can't think of examples of other sites pulling from the community for such front-and-center features, and it is very clear that the videos take into consideration the suggestions from the community which is great for multiple, (ugh) synergistic reasons... even if you do ignore my super fringe suggestions.
