Sega removes 19 iOS and Android games from mobile marketplaces

Sega pulls 19 games from mobile stores after a cryptic statement was made on its blog recently.

Sega has finally followed through on a promise made a few weeks ago saying certain games no longer meet its quality standards and need to be removed from the App Store for iOS devices, Google Play Store, Samsung App Store, and Amazon App Store.

The games removed from mobile marketplaces are:

  • After Burner Climax
  • Altered Beast
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Golden Axe 1, 2 & 3
  • Jet Set Radio
  • Phantasy Star 2
  • Space Harrier 2
  • Streets of Rage 1 & 3
  • Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2
  • Super Monkey Ball Adventure
  • Super Monkey Ball Tip'n'Tilt 1 & 2
  • Super Monkey Ball: Touch & Roll
  • Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz
  • Virtua Fighter 2

SEGA promises those who already downloaded and paid for the apps will continue to have access to their games. The only way someone would not be able to play their purchased game is if they acquire a new device which isn’t compatible with these older titles. Sega also said, “Given the right situation, these titles may return in an updated form.” The Sega mobile library has grown slim with only Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force, and all the Sonic the Hedgehog games remaining.

Earlier this year, Sega announced they would be laying off a total of 300 employees as a part of its restructuring efforts. The company said the restructuring was necessary in order for it to better focus on its online PC games and smartphone titles. We were hoping this would mean we would get more mobile games, not less. But fans of these games shouldn’t take to the streets yet considering there’s always a possibility they could return in some fashion down the line. It’s just a shame they’ll no longer be available for new buyers for the time being.
