The folks at Sony and Polyphony Digital are once again looking for the next great professional racer. And just as they have for four seasons prior, they are looking to Gran Turismo for their next prospect.

GT Academy will begin its fifth season tonight at midnight (time zone not provided). Gran Turismo 6 owners will be able to jump on their PS3s and access the special in-game event that will allow them to show their skills. The competition will last for eight weeks, with the 20 fastest race times advancing to the next stage. Finalists will then compete head-to-head against one another in the U.S. Nationals.

"In a change from previous years, the U.S. region will for the first time participate as part of the International competition where only the top six will advance to the International Finals," SCEA product manager Ken Chan explained on PlayStation.Blog. "There they will try to prove they are one of the best in the world, deserving of a shot at the dream job of a professional racing placement for Nissan."

The GT Academy competition will continue until June 16.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

How can Polyphony Digital afford to take so damn long with the development of their games? Since the PS3, they're slacking, and the competition seems to have gotten a lot tougher. I can't even list all the racing games/sims because there are so many: Forza, iRacing, Assetto Corsa, The Crew, Project Cars...

GT franchise is still considered the top end racing sim for Playstation owners. I agree that they've been coasting on previous successes, and I haven't played all of the games you list here, but I don't think anyone else has really stepped up to claim the racing sim crown (Forza doesn't count because it's XBox only.)

By that logic GT doesn't count because its PS only.

Because of the games you listed The Crew is the only one out on the PS right now and it's not a racing sim. Project Cars is supposed to get a console release but it keeps getting pushed back.

There just is no competition on the PS to GT plus the name alone has so much legacy that people will buy whatever Polyphony Digital releases whenever they get around to it.

Car companies I'm sure pay to have their shit modeled perfectly, also the companies advertised in the game too. It if makes a couple sales of cars then worth it's cost for them I suppose.

        Dlc probably helped them too.
