Square Enix has announced a new Star Ocean game is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness will be developed by Tri-Ace and will take place on an uncivilized planet called Fakelead, which is approximately 6,000-light years away from Earth. The game will feature a battle system that will take place in real-time and be seamless as attacks will change based on your distance from the target. Combos are triggered by pushing buttons consecutively.

Seamless events will be included in the new Star Ocean game in addition to traditional event scenes. These seamless events will include scenarios where enemies attack you and outcomes that will branch out depending on its result.

Three main characters have been revealed: Fedel Camus, who is the protagonist that specializes in fencing, Miki Sorvesta, who is Fede’s childhood friend, and Lilia, a girl who lost both her memories and emotions.

As of now, there's no word yet if Star Ocean 5 will be making its way to Western markets as it's only been announced for Japan. We know there are a lot of Star Ocean fans in the West and Square Enix has been pretty good with publishing the series outside of Japan, so we have no doubt we'll eventually see Star Ocean 5.

It's Square Enix. The fact that this big reveal was actually another game in a franchise people loved and thought was dead, and that it's on consoles, is refreshing. I think most of us familiar with SE just assumed it'd be another fucking mobile game.

Plus, these new consoles have been jrpg deprived, something square use to be well known for on the snes.

I've felt that Square-Enix has lost some of the 'charm/magic' from when they were Squaresoft.

It's not like nostalgia is making us look back on the SNES/PS1 era of JRPGs and think that the games made then were better than they actually are. Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 4/6, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, etc all hold up today.

I only played SO4 and I liked that one. I don't mind more japanese games with dumb stories and lots of spectacle I don't even remember what the game was about but bring it on, I only remember enjoying the last game.

Apparently the entire Star Ocean universe is populated by scumbags and those weird blob things with teeth.

Still, I'm tentatively excited. SO3 was my favorite because of its gameplay. Anything to rinse away the last one.
