February NPD: PS4 wins again, while Majora's Mask crashes into top spot

The PS4 wins the hardware race again, which isn't a huge surprise. What is a huge surprise is that the monsters of Evolve have been beaten out by an old gaming stalwart: The Legend of Zelda.

February is now in the books and it's time to continue forward in the console arms race. The PlayStation 4 has prevailed, once again, managing to ward off a strong push from the Xbox One. Despite the Xbox One's renewed price drop, the PS4 has emerged on top in terms of both hardware and software sales. Meanwhile, a new challenger has entered the hardware ring, thanks to Nintendo issuing the New 3DS XL in February. While the handheld wasn't able to knock off its console competitors, sales for the New 3DS XL were very strong for the month of February, with over 150,000 units sold in just its first week of release, with all 3DS hardware combining for nearly 400,000 units sold for the month. When combined, that even outsells the PS4. As for Microsoft, it isn't all doom and gloom. In fact, the atmosphere is a positive one, as they are touting an 84 percent sales growth in the month of February, compared to the month before.

Meanwhile, there's something huge at the top of the software sales charts, but it's not any of the monsters of Evolve. No, it's the moon! Yes, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D has knocked off the behemoths of Evolve and the zombies of Dying Light, largely on the strength of the New 3DS XL's launch. Evolve takes a runner-up prize, while Dying Light falls to #3. Meanwhile, Sony walks away with a sense of disappointment, as The Order: 1886 comes in an underwhelming 9th place, while the other big New 3DS launch title, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, rounds out the top 10.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
