Wolfenstein: The Old Blood explores a pre-New Order world in May

Bethesda and MachineGames are returning to Wolfenstein in May with a standalone downloadable prequel called Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.

In 2014, Bethesda and MachineGames tackled the Wolfenstein franchise head-on, successfully reviving what was rapidly becoming a stale franchise. Wolfenstein: The New Order went on to become one of the best games of last year, with the Shacknews Chatty community even voting it as its GOTY runner-up. With this experience still fresh in everyone's minds, Bethesda and MachineGames are returning to this world with a new downloadable standalone prequel called Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.

Those that played the introductory stages to The New Order are familiar with BJ Blazkowicz's rush on Castle Wolfenstein. The Old Blood will expand on this journey, further exploring Blazkowicz's mission to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead's compound and find an evil Nazi archaeologist looking to unleash dark forces upon the world.

The Old Blood will introduce new environments, enemies, and weaponry not previously seen in The New Order, further fleshing out the world established last year. Fans won't have to wait very long for it, either. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood will arrive on May 5 with a budget $19.99 price tag on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Those looking for a glimpse at the game can check out the trailer below, while Bethesda brings more footage to Twitch during this weekend's PAX East event on Friday and Saturday at 7:30AM PST.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

This is great news. I was wondering where they could go after New Order and I loved the game enough to want it to be a series. This works for me.

I really hope it plays more like the 1960 levels. I loved the game, but the first level set in 1946 was it's weakest part.

So, re-Return to Castle Wolfenstein ? Blazkowicz must love the place.
      Anyway, I'm sold!

This is awesome and the tone they're taking with the old horror movie feel I'm absolutely down with since they nailed the "what if Nazi Germany dictated pop culture in the 50's" bit in the first one.

One thing I'm not sure about is we know Blazkowicz ultimately fails to stop the Nazis from winning in this reality so I wonder how this little episode ends.

Also l kinda wish they'd tack a multiplayer mode on. I know the game benefitted greatly from a SP focus but it sure would be fun to just be in an arena environment where everyone has all the fucked up guns they have in the game. Maybe ZeniMax could see fit to let people mod it in or something. Then again maybe it would be fun for five minutes and then it winds up just being dudes standing in a room machine gunning each other.

I hope this is just a side project and preliminary thing they're releasing prior to a new RTCW MP or RTCW: ET MP game. Everybody wants that sooo bad.

I'm on the impression that it basically is an alternate universe entirely. I don't know if "reboot" applies but I've always been under the impression that the games leading up to Wolfenstein 2009, and maybe that one too, take place in a world where WW2 went down like we know it - Hitler/Nazis defeated.

To some extent it's like the Pony Express - that service has had countless romanticized retellings of how awesome it allegedly was, glossing over the fact that it only existed for 18 months. There are tons and tons of WW2 works out there but the war only lasted six years and no one got to kill Hitler. W:TNO works around this by saying the Nazis won. And Inglorious Basterds works around the other part by killing Hitler in a glorious way.

Well, up to now, RTCW, Wolf 2009 & New Order were part of the same story line, especially through Deathshead.
But hey, can't stop BJ going to war forever!

RTCW was a reboot (starts with BJ killing the guard in his cell, just like Wolf3d. Hitler is still alive, etc.

Wolfenstein 2009 is a direct sequel to RTCW and The New Order is a direct sequel to 2009.

But every one of them kind of goes out of its way to not talk about the previous one.
