Intel's 1.13Ghz P3 Recall

CNet is reporting that Dell and IBM have stopped selling machines powered with the new Intel Pentium3 1.13Ghz CPU. Looking at Intel's past year of announcing but not delivering new processors it would be easy to assume shortage here, but seeing Kyle of HardOCP's 1.13Ghz Review that was not there might be the possibility of a technical glitch.

I just got off the phone with Intel and we posed the question this morning whether or not they have found any problems with the 1.13GHz PIIIs. George Alfs of Intel has this to say. Intel has tested all weekend and has been able to reproduce the Sysmark2000 and Linux Kernel Compilation failures. George stated Intel has "found marginalities" in the 1.13GHz PIII part and will be working with their OEMs to either "refund or replace" what 1.13GHz PIII CPUs that have made it to the end user.

update: Yup, "marginalities" indeed. According to ZDNet, Intel is calling back all the 1.13Ghz CPUs that have shipped so far (what, like all 12?) because of the small problems that they have found in some of the processors. They'll be back on the market in "a couple of months". Thanks Conan Ford.
