Now that Earth is completely bankrupt and laid to waste, it's time to take to the battlefield. Your weapon of choice? Money! Offworld Trading Company is looking to take RTS games in a slightly different direction, with publisher Stardock setting an Early Access date for Mohawk Games' debut effort. The game will be made available on February 12.

First unveiled in May, Offworld Trading Company marks a return for Civilization IV designer Soren Johnson. The idea is to colonize the big red planet of Mars and gather as many resources as possible. In order to compete against others, players must use the power of economics to gather resources, set market trends, and drive their competitors out of business before usurping their resources for themselves.

The Early Access build for Offworld Trading Company will feature head-to-head multiplayer, as well as a single-player campaign. The folks at Mohawk will be offering weekly looks into their progress via their Twitch channel every Thursday at 12PM PST. Offworld Trading Company will be available for $35.99 (10 percent off its normal price) during its stint on Steam Early Access and is available for pre-order directly through the game's website. Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Interesting idea, but I'm going to have to see a lot more to be convinced that I'll like it. It's just a strange concept, so I have nothing to base it against.

I played a bunch of the beta and it's basically a competitive resource management board game in computer game form.

The AI is pretty hard to beat but I can see this game being great VS multiplayer with people. Since one of the mechanics in the game is sabotaging your opposition and also the goal is bring able to buy out the stocks of your competition.

This looks really promising! I'll have to keep my eye on it. Reminding me a little bit of Outpost. And damn would I like an Outpost 3.

I would kill for an Outpost 3 that lived up to the promise of Outpost 1.
