PlayStation welcomes Spotify while sweeping Sony's Music Unlimited under the rug

PlayStation Music will allow its users to enjoy their Spotify tunes from the comfort of their consoles and mobile devices this spring.

Sony has announced it's partnering up with Spotify to deliver a new service called PlayStation Music that is expected to be released this spring on the PlayStation Network.

This means Music Unlimited will be coming to a close on March 29 to make way for PlayStation Music. PlayStation users will then be able to link their accounts to Spotify, where they’ll be able to access its free, though ad-supported, streaming music or enjoy its premium service that offers music sans ads for $10 per month. PlayStation Music is also said to be playable in the background during other gaming sessions while more features are expected to be announced at a later date.

PlayStation Music will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Sony’s Xperia smartphone and tablets. Unfortunately, there was no mention of Sony’s handheld, the PlayStation Vita, in today’s announcement.

Music Unlimited subscribers will be given a free month of access from February 28 to March 29 presumably as a way to help them transition into the PlayStation Music service.

I’ve been a big fan of Spotify for years now and I am excited to hear of its partnership with PlayStation. I tend to have Spotify playing in my headphones while I play games, but having it come directly from my PlayStation will make playing games while listening to some sick beats much easier.

Does anyone know when they are going to release the HBO Go app?

Don't hold your breath. I just use XB1 for HBO. Did you end up hooking it up or did you return it?

I finally hooked it up, but the damned thing is so big it won't fit in my entertainment center so I disconnected it. We've ordered a new entertainment center (one that isn't so narrow) but it will be a week or two before it gets here so I'll hold off till then.

Do you still need xbox live to use the netflix & hbo go apps?

Ya, I really wish the thing was smaller. And no - thank god - you do not need live just to use those apps. That was a deal breaker for me on 360 since PS3 was my main console last gen. I've hit some roadblocks where you need Live (uploading game clips) but not the apps.

Since I don't play online MP much, if at all, I just subscribe to PS+ since their free games are so much better than the crap Live generally provides. I mean look at this month:

Yep, PS+ is a much better value, for sure. I have no interest at all in multiplayer games, so it's awesome that I can use apps without gold.

I really want to play Metro Last Light, it's a bummer the PS+ deal is only for PS3 version. I think I might buy the redux version after I finish last of us.

You can get it from Gamefly. That's what I did for the PS4 remake. The graphics are much crisper on the PS4 version, no question.
