WWE Immortals is a free-to-play mobile fighter from NetherRealm Studios

WWE Superstars have never quite done (mortal) combat like this, with NetherRealm releasing a free-to-play fighter on iOS and Android today.

As one of Shacknews' resident wrestling fans on this site, it's time to issue another public service announcement that the WWE Royal Rumble is ten days away. To help get everyone in the spirit this time around, however, is an unlikely source: NetherRealm Studios, the famed Mortal Kombat creator. Following the success of their Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game, NetherRealm is taking to mobile devices once again for WWE Immortals.

WWE Immortals takes WWE Superstars like John Cena, Sheamus, The Big Show, The Rock, and others and re-imagines them as Mortal Kombat-like combatants with special powers and abilities. In fact, they're a lot more MK-like than you might think, as the trailer even shows Roman Reigns with a Scorpion-style spear (the weapon) leading into his spear (the wrestling move).

If nothing else, WWE Immortals looks to offer some fascinating visuals and an interesting NetherRealm take on professional wrestling sports entertainment. The game is free to play right now on the App Store and Google Play.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
