Weekend Movie Review
by Jack Mathews, Aug 26, 2000 9:48am PDTHaven't seen one of these for a bit (both Steve and I have been busy for the past couple weekends), so let's resurrect it here with The Cell. The movie was quite entertaining, but not too much beneath the surface. If you look under all of the special effects and strange dreams, you actually see a pretty formulaic Hollywood treatment of psycho killer people. The script itself just wasn't very clever at all. But the wacekd out stuff when in the minds of others made the movie watchable. Basically, the movie's a two hour music video sans music. But make no mistake, it is fun to watch. The acting and such were done well enough, with my main complaint being how underused Vince Vaughn was.

2. I like the premise of Highlander.
3. Actually I've never seen any Highlander movie other than the first one and I've only seen about 60% of the Highlander TV episodes. But that (and 5 minutes at the IMDB) is more than enough to write #75.
4. Call me demented, but I really like to see peoples' heads get chopped off. Admit it - you like it too. In fact, everyone does. It's just human nature.
5. I watched Survivor all summer and never really liked it.
6. Half the appeal of Highlander, Star Trek, or Britney Spears comes from looking down on pop culture.
Hi, I'm Duncan Macleod. I am an ultra-sexy alpha male with absolutely no character flaws AT ALL. Or at least that's what I want everyone to think. I had them rewrite the script to "Highlander: Endgame" ten times in order to uphold my monumental vanity. In this movie I get to kill all the bad guys, fuck all the chicks, and then chop off Connor Macleod's head at the end. (Sorry, but like *duh* you all know that's how this movie will end.)
Hi, I'm Connor Macleod. No one can understand how the fuck I ever got cast in the first Highlander movie. I can't act, am legally blind in both eyes (cataracts) and laugh like a Goddamn retard (i.e. "heh, heh, heh" with a 2 second pause between each "heh"). To top it off, my attempt at a Scottish accent is about as convincing as a Catholic priest's oath of celebacy. All I will say is that I had to bob nob like a madman for 3 months to get that role.

Jennifer Lopez looks great and can act toO.
And I like her voice.
But otherwise, it is just another psycho killer movie.

it tried to keep you guessing, but if you know action movies, you know exactly who the main character will end up fighting at the end...

The movie's a retread of lots of other films (and of just about every psycho killer idea ever dreamt up by Chris Carter). But you don't care terribly much because visually, it's roaringly good. And speaking of roaring: the sfx for this film have advanced my schedule for a hearing aid.
Vince Vaughn is underused, as Jack says, but so, in the most important way, is Jennifer Lopez. As a performer, Lopez has exactly two moods: mommy, and sex thang. We get plenty of the first, which is more than enough. But of the latter, we get -- what? Her in underwear digging around a refrigerator? Come on, she's no actress, she's the Raquel Welch of her generation: so get widda booty! I'm not paying for another flick she's in unless it's BOOTYLICIOUS!
I actually agree with Jack for once.
That's pretty much exactly how I felt about the movie... the effects were cool, the story was lame, and the acting was decent...
I just rented Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai last night.
God damn that movie was cool.

Anyways, I saw the Cell.. I did not care for it much.. and definitely not as scary as people claim it to be.. like "I lost sleep over this movie", because I slept more last night after I saw it than I have all week.
I agree with the review. One part that completely ruined it for me was when Jennifer Lopez locked them outside of the "transfer" room. I mean, talk about contrived on the moment writing... Did the writers just have an anneurism of some sort then?
