Weekend Movie Review

Haven't seen one of these for a bit (both Steve and I have been busy for the past couple weekends), so let's resurrect it here with The Cell. The movie was quite entertaining, but not too much beneath the surface. If you look under all of the special effects and strange dreams, you actually see a pretty formulaic Hollywood treatment of psycho killer people. The script itself just wasn't very clever at all. But the wacekd out stuff when in the minds of others made the movie watchable. Basically, the movie's a two hour music video sans music. But make no mistake, it is fun to watch. The acting and such were done well enough, with my main complaint being how underused Vince Vaughn was.

  • 1. I like Methos.
    2. I like the premise of Highlander.
    3. Actually I've never seen any Highlander movie other than the first one and I've only seen about 60% of the Highlander TV episodes. But that (and 5 minutes at the IMDB) is more than enough to write #75.
    4. Call me demented, but I really like to see peoples' heads get chopped off. Admit it - you like it too. In fact, everyone does. It's just human nature.
    5. I watched Survivor all summer and never really liked it.
    6. Half the appeal of Highlander, Star Trek, or Britney Spears comes from looking down on pop culture.

  • Jack's review is right on.

The movie's a retread of lots of other films (and of just about every psycho killer idea ever dreamt up by Chris Carter). But you don't care terribly much because visually, it's roaringly good. And speaking of roaring: the sfx for this film have advanced my schedule for a hearing aid.

Vince Vaughn is underused, as Jack says, but so, in the most important way, is Jennifer Lopez. As a performer, Lopez has exactly two moods: mommy, and sex thang. We get plenty of the first, which is more than enough. But of the latter, we get -- what? Her in underwear digging around a refrigerator? Come on, she's no actress, she's the Raquel Welch of her generation: so get widda booty! I'm not paying for another flick she's in unless it's BOOTYLICIOUS!
