Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix was released on the PlayStation 3 this week, but those who would prefer to enjoy the Kingdom Hearts series on their PlayStation 4 are out of luck for the time being, considering the console isn’t backwards compatible. PS4 owners shouldn’t give up on the Kingdom Hearts dream as the co-director of 2.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts 3 says Square Enix hasn’t completely ruled out the series being made available on current-gen consoles.

Tai Yasue-san spoke with IGN about the development process of Kingdom Hearts 3, which Square Enix had always planned to release HD 1.5 and 2.5 Remix as a way to prepare latecomers to the franchise to better prepare themselves for the upcoming sequel. When asked about current-gen versions of the game ever seeing the light of day, he responded by saying, “I think [putting the games on PS4] is something we’ll explore. We understand what our players want, so we will explore the possibility. I’m not making any announcements though, we can’t make any announcements yet!”

Having a current-gen version of the recently released remixed games would benefit Xbox owners the most considering only PS3 owners have been able to catch up with the Kingdom Hearts story. If there are Xbox One players who are even thinking about picking up Kingdom Hearts 3, having their own versions of the HD 1.5 and 2.5 Remix would certainly better prepare them to jump into the latest chapter of the game’s story.
