October NPD: PlayStation 4 wins again, while NBA 2K15 balls to #1

October was the big month for blockbuster game releases and it looks like NBA 2K15 is the bigger winner for software, while the PlayStation 4 continues to dominate.

With the holiday season fast approaching, it's time for another look at the monthly NPD report. Sony has once again claimed victory, with the PS4 outselling the Xbox One for the month of October. Specific hardware sales numbers from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo were not shared with the NPD group. According to the NPD Group's Liam Callahan, however, both Sony and Microsoft have plenty to celebrate. Their first 12 months outsold the first 12 months of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by a whopping 70 percent.

October was also a huge month for blockbuster game releases. But in what can be considered somewhat of an upset, the big winner appears to be the ballers of the NBA with NBA 2K15. Right behind them is Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, with The Evil Within and Boderlands: The Pre-Sequel coming at its heels. The long-awaited Destiny took a big tumble from the top spot all the way to #5. A notable omission is the Xbox One-exclusive Sunset Overdrive, though the NPD report notes that it was the ninth-highest selling game when sorted by individual SKUs. A pair of big releases that sadly cannot make a similar kind of claim are Bayonetta 2 and DriveClub, which sees themselves completely shut out of the top ten. Likewise, the critically-acclaimed Alien: Isolation appears to be left out in the cold.

Next month's report should be a very interesting one to watch, especially with the Black Friday deals that are rapidly approaching. Microsoft has already prepared for the holiday season with its $50 price cut, but time will tell whether it's enough to outgain the PS4 juggernaut.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
