The long-running anime fighting franchise returns when Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- hits PS4 and PS3 at the end of the year.

It's been a banner year for fighting games this year across a number of franchises, like Street Fighter, BlazBlue, and Persona 4 Arena. Aksys Games is now ready to send 2014 off in a blaze of glory by announcing that the bizarrely-titled Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- will arrive on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 this coming December.

This installment of the long-running fighting game franchise, done in conjunction with Arc System Works, will be the first to use Unreal Engine 3 with 3D character models.

"The series has been around since time immemorial (and by that, I mean for 16 years!)," Aksys director of production Frank 'Bo' DeWindt II explains on PlayStation.Blog. "It's been redesigned from the world of 2D, to incorporate both 2D and 3D elements, making it a veritable feast for the eyes kind of experience, thanks to some technical Arc System Works magic and the Unreal 3 engine. Thanks to that, 3D models have been fashioned to create the illusion of 2D sprites without anyone being the wiser."

The new Guilty Gear will feature more than overhauled visuals, as it will feature new mechanics like the expanded Roman Cancel. It will also pack in new characters like the sword-wielding femme fatale Ramlethal Valentine and the mighty Bedman, who... attacks... from a bed. Huh... well, ok then. Sin Kiske will also join the roster with lightning powers, while Elphelt will bring a heavy arsenal of guns into the game as a DLC character.

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- arrives on December 16.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
