3dfx Retail Performance

3dfx has Nvidia beat when it comes to drivers for Win2k. 3dfx already has WHQL certified drivers, and the performance difference when running a 3dfx board in Win2k compared to Win9x/ME is very little. My GeForce on the other hand is very slow in Win2k. Not to mention that the nvidia OpenGl driver still flakes out when debugging in VisualC++. Thats something which has been driving me nuts for months now.

Too damn bad. Just more cards without T&L holding back the use of more polygons in games.

Sure processors can keep up with the performance of the T&L engine, the benefit comes from being able to off-load the T&L processing to the video card while the CPU handles the physics, AI, and other gameplay tasks.

Dammit, I want high poly games. FUCK 3dfx, stop holding us back!

On the brightside, if this keeps them in business for another quarter, then it keeps the NVIDIA OEMs from screwing us for another quarter.

I want a voodoo5-6000 dam-it!

I built a new system last month, and just decided to get the fastest board available, and to me the answer to that was clear. I got a 64MB GeForce2 GTS. After playing around for a few hours, and seeing that (Nvidia) Still had no way to turn on vsync in Q3A, I got pissed, and said, “what the fuck, lets go get a Voodoo 5-5500 to see how much slower it is, and to check out it’s FSAA” And when I got it home and fired it up I was really pleased, vsync worked like its supposed to, the image was rock solid none of that shitty shearing that I’ve been living with on my old TNT2 Ultra. Then I ran some benchmarks at the settings I use, which are total eye candy, every thing maxed 32bit everything, and the V5 was getting like 66fps vs 63 for the GeForce2. So I returned the GeForce2 and never looked back. After all that 16bit color is all anyone needs crap 3dfx was selling, I never thought I’d own another one of their products, but I’m really happy with my Voodoo5.

Damnit, I want 3dfx to succeed. nVidia needs the competition. They are beginning to ream us all with prices (I bought one of the early gf2 cards for $350 - ow!). I still don't believe the T&L stuff is doing much for me performance wise, but the card is fast as hell, so I'm happy. :)

I don't understand (kind of a moron I guess) how they can be #1 in the retail channel for that period of time & still be losing money.

NO SHIT! There are like 5 choices for geFORCE 2 cards...and one voodoo 5 brand. Add up ALL the sales of GTS cards and......hmmm yea.

I nearly bought a 64MB Hercules GF2. Decided against it once I was able to compare FSAA. I thought 3dfx's was better. I was really interested in the Raedon but decided against it for now.

The sad part is I had planned to pass on the v5 for "Rampage" then their software broke resulting in a product delay....

at least I only paid $90 for my v5 after selling old equipment.

I bet those GF and *new* GF2 owners are looking to waste some more of their hard earnef cash on a GF2U.

No, nothing new, just faster.

So are they going to come out with a good card now or just keep coming out with the inferior product like they have for the last year? Maybe they should've stuck to making the chips and having creative / guillemot / elsa / everyone else create the actual cards. More choices for consumer in terms of features and bundled shit, then all they would have to worry about is making a fast chip, like, say, NVIDIA.

Most people don't give a shit about the gaps in performance rates, thats many just the fanboy hardcore element on the net.

Both are good cards.

3dfx should be a non profit organization. With nvidia showing the profits they turned I don't think 3dfx can cut a thick slice of profit pie.
