Activision announced Destiny has sold over $325 million in its first five days of release.

Activision announced last week Destiny sold over $500 million to retail and first parties worldwide, leaving many wondering just how much of those retail sales would translate to actual sales. Wonder no longer as Activision has announced Destiny has grossed over $325 million within its first five days of release. The sales information comes from a combination of Chart-Track, first parties, retail customer sell-through information and Activision Blizzard’s internal estimates.

Destiny’s fan base has been eating the game up since its launch as well as Bungie says players have logged over 100 million hours of online play by the end of the title’s first week and participated in a total of 137 million activities.

“Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can’t put down their controllers.” said Activision CEO Eric Hrishberg, in the announcement. “And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game.”

Good to hear. It was always going to be a success regardless of whatever lame complaints other sites came up with. The game is good and people know it.

So that's about 5,063.882 copies, a portion of which goes to rental stores. That's a lot of disappointment.

And a ton more fun. Stop with all the pessimism folks and just admit that you didn't like the game but others can be on the other end of the spectrum. We should be celebrating its attempt at something different. The antagonism is so annoying.

I'll be over here having fun if you need me.

I forget, was the $500 million number that gets tossed about include marketing costs or was that purely development? It is like a movie where it may have cost $100 million to make plus $50 million to market.

The 500m is game and all the DLC they're going to add to their barebones experience to get more money out of the players.

I think the $500 million is the amount they expected to spend developing the game over ten years. $30-50 Million per game makes lot more sense than $500 Million for a single game.

$50 million isn't that much for a studio of Bungie's size and a four-year dev cycle. They likely spent far more than that on Destiny. Whether it was $500 million, I can't say. But it had to exceed $100 million.

Well, they're not going to spend $50 million per year, given that this budget is for (IIRC) 2 full games, and all the content that comes in between.

That's freaking Star Wars The Old Republic Money just to launch IIRC.

There is no fucking way they've spent $500 million ways to develop Destiny.

EA supposedly blew through $200 million for The Old Republic, and GTA V is estimated to have cost around $130 million. And those are like the most expensive games ever.

They plan to spend $500 m over the 10 year development cycle for Destiny. They didn't spent it on Destiny 1.

Q: The $500 million figure that was bandied about, are you able to talk about the split of that between development costs and marketing at all?

Pete Parsons: For marketing you'd have to ask Activision people, but for development costs, not anything close to $500 million. I think that speaks a lot more to the long-term investment that we're making in the future of the product.

Marketing carries the day here. It's not horrible, but it's not amazing by any means.

As I'm getting into it deeper and grasping the mechanics around grinding, I'm almost convinced they have set this up to be a content platform. I'm really hoping this is the case, because it really does feel like a retail beta at this point.
