SimCity Buildit accepting mobile mayorships on iOS, Android 'soon'

A new SimCity has been announced, but it has only been announced for iOS and Android. Considering SimCity's past launch issues, maybe it's for the best?

A new SimCity title has been in the works for over a year, but its launch platforms may or may not surprise you. The new title, called SimCity Buildit, is an all-new title that will be made available on iOS and Android.

SimCity Buildit will feature the typical game mechanics that will allow players to pinch, zoom and rotate the view of their city in whatever angle they please. According to the official website for the game, we should expect “vivid, 3D-quality graphics.”

As for how the game itself plays, and whether or not it’ll be a freemium title, details are currently sparse. Considering EA’s previous mobile offerings, we wouldn’t be surprised if SimCity Buildit turns out to be a freemium game.

This isn't the first time EA has brought SimCity to mobile, but it is the first time the company has done so after SimCity's PC remake took gaming by storm. The title's launch suffered for several weeks due to its online-only feature, which was fixed shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, SimCity still suffered quite the black eye in the eyes of gamers. With that said, we're certainly interested in seeing how EA learned from that experience for the upcoming launch of SimCity Buildit.

The last SimCity mobile game was fantastic (or at least the last one I noticed) and I'd imagine a different studio from SimCity 4 made this, so it might turn out to be alright?

I also liked the previously released SimCity mobile game. If they can combine SimCity 4-style graphics with that gameplay style, then I'd be all for it!

Also, hopefully they learned about IAP with the Dungeon Keeper rage and EU investigation. I'm not holding my breath that they learned much.

Seems like always online and such would make more sense for a mobile version of the game.

Agreed. Games like The Simpsons Tapped Out and Family Guy The Quest for Stuff have been doing well, even though they always need to be connected online. Online-only games on mobile isn't as big of a deal as PC or console as mobile devices are almost always connected to the Internet.
