Destiny gets killer upgrade deal for PS4/Xbox One

Buy the previous generation versions digitally and you can score the current-gen ones for no extra charge.

Bungie promised a killer Destiny announcement today, and it came through in spades.

The developer, in conjunction with the publisher at Activision, has announced that those who purchase the digital version of Destiny on either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 on or before January 15, 2015 will be able to get their coordinating Xbox One or PlayStation 4 version at no extra charge. This includes the extra Guardian content and the season pass.

What's more, your progress will carry over from previous versions of the game to the newer system, so if you start on PlayStation 3 with a particular set of weapons and what-not, you'll be able to continue on PS4. Same with Xbox 360 to Xbox One.

The full FAQ for the deal can be found on Bungie's site here, but regardless of where you go, you're in for a sweet rush with Destiny when it arrives September 9th.

That is a nice deal for people who have yet to upgrade to the PS4.

The beta allowed you to carry over each hero with all items i started on the PS3 and got a PS4 code two days later and was able to log in with my Hero on the PS4 no problem.

It actually worked better than that - you can log in with 360 or X1 (I assume same for PS3/PS4) and play on either platform and switch back and forth as you like. Everything carries over.

I do not have an Xbox so i was not sure if it worked the same as on the PS3/4 where you could just switch when you felt like it.

Is the game cross platform? Or are the PS3 and PS4 user bases separate, for example?

It is not cross-platform, but your characters do carry over from PS3 to PS4 and 360 to Xbox One.

That's actually awesome. I was aiming at getting the PS4 bundle but was on the fence hoping for a PS4 deal this fall/xmas. Best of both worlds. Insta-buy for my PS3 now and see if a nice ps4 bundle hits the shelves this holiday season.

I think that is why it is digital only.

what about the other way? I already preordered Xbone version, but being able to play on the 360 would be nice.
