Lizard Squad, the group behind various DDoS attacks against Battle.net, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, and a host of others, have reportedly been caught.

The Lizard Squad Twitter account acknowledges that members of the group have been caught. In addition to that, a statement on their website further explains that the group is disbanding.

The statement from the Lizard Squad website reads as follows:

We set out on our journey 2 weeks ago with the plan to cause havoc within the gaming community. Our motives varied throughout this adventure. Originally it was to see if we could evade being caught and to experience the raw thrill of anarchy, not being bound to phony laws. We've been called everything from an organized criminal "gang" to complete assh***s, really we are just a bunch of guys with too much free time. Throughout our journey we met new people, gained new members, learned new things. People tried taking swings at us (and missed). We proved that even though we are little in this very big world, that a small group of friends who work together can cause a lot of havoc without legal repercussions. Today we will be disbanding, behind the green reptiles and other bulls***, we have lives believe it or not, things to do, people to meet. Goodbye.

In addition to bringing down various gaming services, Lizard Squad attracted the attention of the FBI when they tweeted a phony bomb threat to American Airlines to bring down Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley's San Diego-bound flight.

We will report additional details when they become available. Thanks to Chatty poster asianwaste for the tip.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Oh my god, what I would give to be in the room when this bubble finally pops. It's going to be brutal. Clearly they're still floating out there in la-la land right now with this statement, they still think this is just a funny game.

The exciting journey doesn't end here, kids. You're about to meet some interesting new people with titles like "Federal Prosecutor" and they're going to explain to you all these cool new concepts like what a "felony" is. And at some point, you're going to realize that this actually isn't very funny at all. Not for you, anyway.

I hope they all got caught. These guys need a wake-up call. Diverting a plane with a bomb threat is not the kind of funny hijinks that gets you sent to the principal's office and they need to understand that IMO.

Not sure if you are serious, but the issue as I see it that this time it was gaming related. Net time bored asshole teens might try to take down something that has serious repercussions. I think it has to be shown that this isn't going to be tolerated.

Exactly, that was very much too far. A fairly harmless (granted annoying) DDOS is one thing, a threat is in no way harmless, fake or not.

Yeah. A threat to a plane is a serious federal crime and they could be in big trouble for that part.

I bet it was the fake bomb threat that brought out the big guns. That was just extremely stupid on their part. It likely brought in every Homeland agency known to man to hunt them down instead of cyberterrorist agencies.

Not just a bomb threat, a bomb threat on an airline. That's gonna get everyone's attention. The moment they did that it was all over.

I hope they get an example made of them. Full criminal prosecution with restitution requirements.

I hope fate hands them the most cruel of cards: they will work at prison labor rates, to pay back the corporations they took offline.

Well I for one never said anything about rape. I agree, rape isn't funny and all these jokes or whatever you want to call them are part of the problem. A lot of people seem to view rape as a normal or acceptable part of the prison experience and that's pretty backwards indeed.

Yeah, the rape stuff made me squirm as well. I probably should have taken the initiative and said something.
