Elder Scrolls Online getting loyalty program

Those subscribed for three months get the first-tier reward, a vanity pet. The next prize will come at six months.

Bethesda and ZeniMax Online have announced a subscriber loyalty program for Elder Scrolls Online, aimed at keeping subscribers around for the long haul.

The first reward, starting in September, will be a High Hrothgar Wraith vanity pet. It will be available to everyone who has been subscribed for at least three months, minus your free month and any complimentary time. If you've let your subscription lapse, you can still get this and any other rewards if you re-up and reach the requirements.

The announcement states that more rewards will be coming over time, and the next tier will be for those who have been subscribed for six months. Presumably the studio could keep this going for quite a while, regularly unveiling prizes as it reaches new time periods. This could also conceivably work cross-platform with the upcoming console versions, though no announcement has been made.

That's a smart way to get people to stick around actually. Are there any other MMOs implementing this? This is the first time I've heard about something like this.

aion had a veteran reward program for years. free goodies once a month, of escalating value the longer you had your account. they weren't random, it was a certain reward at each month of subscription

SWTOR did something similar as I recall; you could get pets or speeders as loyalty rewards.

FFXIV does it too. I think a lot of modern MMOs that still have subs do this.

Of course, something like a vanity pet is of so little value, IMO, that it doesn't make me want to stick around. If it was an item or special ability that made leveling less tedious, or drop rates increase, or something like that, I'd be much more interested.

The Secret World does it. They have both a monthly vanity item and a veteran rewards point system that lets you buy utility items like instant bank access and gear repair.

I know Guild Wars would give you a yearly anniversary present.

GW2 gives you one for every year that your character has been around. You can transfer it between characters, too. Which helps for the item that levels you up to 20 if you're wanting to start up a new character.

This is clearly a preemptive reward for those that help pay for the game to go free to play.

People who obsess over pets and mounts in MMOs are pretty funny.

This was not a bad game. I thought some parts of what it did, it did better than any other MMO out there. The world was fun and atmospheric to explore in MMO-terms, and jumping over to Wildstar was horrible despite the much better combat / game design otherwise.

Problem is, the parts that were good in MMO-context have been done better on the SP side of things, and the MMO-aspect didn't really bring anything to the game that I found enjoyable.
