GameFly, the video game rental service, has announced it has sold its digital download service.

According to a notice on the site, that part of the business has been sold to AtGames Holding Ltd. GameFly will continue handling operations until later this year, or until the transition is complete.

"We at AtGames are excited about the next step and future of bringing games directly to your desktop," reads a statement from AtGames. "In holding true to the fantastic service GameFly Digital has provided, AtGames’ mission is to build upon an extensive product line-up, quality service, and great customer support. AtGames appreciates your continued business and looks forward to servicing the needs of consumers like yourself through innovation, continued extensive library of great games, and build an incredible community of like-minded gamers. Thank you again for your patience and understanding during this transition period."

This applies to GameFly's digital service, so the company's standard by-mail rental service appears to be unphased.

Are they just completely getting out of the gaming business?

Is that Direct2Drive or was that something else?

Is GameFly having fiscal issues and trying to sell off? I'm curious what their long term plans are given the rise of digital distribution. They're probably okay this generation, but they're going to start feeling the squeeze. I'm not even sure what their best move is.

yes, but it's gone through several iterations since the direct 2 drive days. I guess my lone Mac copy of Dragon Age will follow D2D to the next owner. Not that I care, I put the key in origin and its in there anyway.

yeah, GF inherited all of the D2D accounts. however, there were a handful of games that didnt come over, as in they literally just disappeared forever. i dont remember specifically but it was something to do with the companies went out of business, and couldnt afford/didnt care enough to renegotiate a deal with GF or something, and so they couldnt make them available. i had one game that disappeared into the ether like this, but fuck all if i can remember what it was. there is not record of it ever existing in my purchase history at all and i think i got a "Sorry dude" email from them. its ok though because it was something i obviously dont care enough about to even remember :) everything else i bought on there either plugged into steam or is still on the account.

i wonder if anything else will be lost with this new change in ownership?

I feel bad for whoever was stupid enough to buy gamefly's digital download service. It should have just died when direct 2 drive went down.

No longer being owned. I remember when GF bought the Shack, but I don't recall anything about them being sold off or something. Will AtGames buy Shack?

I hope this goes smoothly....I bought too much stuff because of the 20 % off code, and even though most games used a Steam or Uplay or Origin code, some things like the DLC for AC:III require me to download them using the Downloader and I don't feel like backing that crap up.....
