Pay Artists for Music from Napster
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 18, 2000 12:31pm PDTGetting music from Napster and feeling kinda sorry for the artist? There's a site called Fairtunes.com that will send your money to the artist. So far they have collected $821 US and $191 Canadian dollars for all kinds of artists, and recently sent out $7 (yeah count those dollar bills) to singer Sarah McLachlan. Some guy came up with this because he wanted to reward the artists, instead of the music company behind the artist. From what I've seen in the comments of Napster stories, I don't think many people are interested in doing this ;)

actually i think i'll send in a few bucks to some artists. and when you think about it 7 dollars is like selling 250 albums.
This company is run by two high-school buddies of mine. :)
Interesting idea, but it works under the principle that swapping MP3s IS illegal and morally wrong, and so if you choose to do something illegal, you should at least justify it to yourself by sending some money to the artist. Seems like flawed logic to me, but... interesting idea nonetheless. I'm curious to see if it catches on.
As for it being an amateur-looking site.. What does it matter? They have all the proper licenses and secure pages and whatnot... It's no different from sending your credit card number to some computer OEM or anything else. Also, they have an external company audit them every month (?) who will publish the results so that we can be sure that they're on the up and up.

We keep downloading and listening to our free stuff.
End of plan.
(maybe take a break during the downloading of Sanitarium.mp3 and go get a burger)
I am going to send a check to Eminem, via Fairtunes, just for that reason!
But, OTOH, what's to stop Fairtunes from creating a monopoly in "artist compensation" and becoming another evil corporation?
