Yoshi's real name revealed

Console Wars author Blake Harris spills the beans on what we should really call Mario's dino friend.

When Yoshi made his debut in Super Mario World way back in 1991, he became a household name with the series, and, of course, we couldn't help but bellow out "YOSHIIIIII!" every time he appeared on-screen. However, according to Blake Harris, the author of the hit book Console Wars, we've been calling him by the entire name all along. The shame!

In a Nintendo Character Guide that was published way back in 1993, which Harris has been sharing via his Twitter account as of late, Yoshi's true name was revealed…and yet it's only just popping up now, 21 years later. Oh, Internet.

According to the post, here's the official scoop on what Yoshi's real name is. And no, it's not Cosmo…

"Yoshi, properly known as T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, had been held captive in an egg until Mario (homo nintendonus) bopped along and rescued him. Instantly, the young dinosaur and the plumber became fast friends. Together, they set out to rescue Yoshi's dinosaur pals from the wickedness of Bowser."

Nintendo hasn't confirmed this information yet, but considering Harris' historical knowledge on the industry, we're not ones to question him. But still, we bet even Mario probably doesn't say that full name. "Yoshi" kind of has a better catch to it than "Yoshisaur Munchakoopas" anyway…

Meanwhile, Yoshi's Woolly World (and yes, that's still the name of it) arrives in 2015 for Wii U.

And Mario is actually of the species homo nintendonus - sounds canonical to me.

I hope this isn't true. But maybe I just hope 1993 isn't true.
