Rumor: GameStop preparing to introduce a credit card

Don't get too excited, though, as it supposedly comes with a really high interest rate.

GameStop appears to be preparing its own special little credit card for availability sometime later this year.

Some purportedly leaked documents reported by Destructoid give the details. The credit card allows customers to make purchases that automatically calculates points into the PowerUp Rewards program, enabling them to earn points much more quickly towards physical rewards and discounts. 5,000 points are awarded for anyone who signs up with a Basic membership, while Pro members can earn 15,000 points. Exclusive offers are also expected to be available through the card.

However, there's a catch. The interest rate on the card is a staggering 26.99 percent. That's over double the usual market average of 13 percent. There may be a chance GameStop could offer lesser rates as part of a promotion, but, for now, that appears to be the norm.

The company has not formally announced the card, but if the documents are legitimate we should be hearing about it soon.

I've never seen a retailer specific card less than ~29% interest here in Canada. Brick, Futureshop, BestBuy, etc.

They are fine for doing those no payments, no interest for X months assuming you pay it all off before X. Anyone that uses these cards and carries a balance = /facepalm

At least with the Dell credit, in their brochures, they spell it out for you. If you put $2000 on their system and only pay the minimums, it will take you 20+ years and you'll have paid almost $9k.

Also to their, ahem, credit, they say if you pay $50 more than the minimum, they also include that in their charts in the flyers.

At least they are trying to educate who they are giving credit to.

Think that is a law now on bills at least. Each statement I've seen in the last year or so has spelled out just how long it would take to pay off the balance making minimum payments.

You are right. It's the law, at least in the USA, to spell out what people are borrowing and what they are paying back.

They're always 1% away from being charged with loansharking. Those cards are greasy as fuck.

The only way that it would be worth it is if they do special no interest for x amount of months if you buy a new console and accessories together.

They'll do like every other store does, "Hey, sign up today and get 10% off your purchase if you use your new GameStop Powered Up Credit Card! Also, you'll earn DOUBLE the Power Up rewards points with every game you purchase with your GameStop Powered Up Credit Card fueled by Doritos!"

This how America fell. They will tell this story in huddled groups under a radioactive red sky, hiding from the Chinese robot meat harvesters.

If you're the type to get really excited over a credit card, you probably shouldn't own a credit card.

I got an application in the mail a few weeks ago for the Visa Black card. Steel front, carbon fiber back. Slick as all hell. The brochure boasted all these perks, looked like aimed at the traveling business man. I start looking at the paper work to check out the annual fee. $495. And I could add a second person to the account with an annual fee of $295.

Here's a tip, cash works. It can be used anywhere, it is accepted everywhere and you don't have to worry about monthly calls from creditors, credit score or interest rates.
