Microsoft Porting to Linux

WinInfo has a story about a rumor that has been going on for a while that might actually be true. Microsoft is looking into porting its Windows applications to Linux and possibly other versions of Unix. Apparently this has already been work in progress for about a year now, but because of the proprietary interface that software suites such as Office have, results have been dissapointing. Microsoft wants to use this to leverage Linux as an entry point to Windows, as it did by releasing Office for the Macintosh.

  • I smell FUD. "Well, we are porting office to linux, so hey, you dont have to support GNOME Foundation, StarOffice, etc." Everyone sits and waits for MS to put something out, then and teh competition runs out of steam and goes away, and MS dosnt have to do hardly anything. Thats the strategy, and it will be interesting to see how this will turn out against Open Source projects.

Most linux users I know use it to get away from MS. It would be interesting to see how well a linux office suite form MS would be accepted by the linux community, and when it sells poorly, how MS will say "Hey if we cant get software to sell in linux, then no on e can"

Im speculating a lot here, but at this point, given MS track record, I feel Im not to far off base.

I personally dont think I will support any microsoft product on my personal machines, but if they do come out with something half decent, it will certainly give some ammmo to the fight to get linux onto the MS machines at work. A gateway from linux to windows? I see it working the other way around.

at any rate, Im glad to see linux becomeing mainsteam enough to get attention like this

  • Guess I'll try and clarify a few things...
First off, Microsoft's got it wrong if they think releasing Office for linux will get people to switch from linux to Windows, cause it will have the exact opposite effect. More people (ESPECIALLY Businesses) will say "You mean I don't have to buy a $150-$200 version of Windows to do office work? I can just buy their Office suite and download Linux and be set?" and they'll drop Windows like a bad habit.
Secondly, I'm not sure of many Linux users that want MS Apps in linux. It's because MS has shit to do with linux that makes it soo attractive.. and we've already got StarOffice (works pretty well, it's what I use), KOffice (for you KDE peons), and those GNOME tard's are working on their own office suite I believe.
Third, GNOME sucks cock and balls. Only reason a lot of people install it is because some useful programs require GNOME (or work better with it's libs and stuff installed).
