Doom not ready for formal announcement until next year

Bethesda wanted to dispel id trouble rumors

45

The new Doom had its reveal at QuakeCon, but it was a somewhat strange one and exclusive to attendees. Bethesda's Pete Hines has explained why the company chose to unveil it that way, and when we'll be seeing more from Doom.

Apparently, it comes down to id Software being unprepared for a worldwide reveal. He told PC Gamer that the studio didn't want the footage to be picked apart at a time when "normally we wouldn't be showing this to anybody at all." So why bother showing footage to anyone, then? Hines said he wanted to dispel rumors of trouble at id, by sending a clear signal of its current project.

"I really wanted to put something out there that, in a strong way, said, ‘id is working on something that we think is really cool,’" said Hines. "And we wanted ... to show something to [id Software fans] that gives them the confidence that it is still a viable studio that’s doing really cool stuff, that is making a game you want to play, and is treating Doom with the care and respect that you want.

For those who didn't attend QuakeCon, Hines said that normally the PR cycle for a game in this state would begin next year. He said plans can change, but he doesn't think they will, so those of us who didn't go to Texas might have to wait until 2015 for more on Doom. But hey, at least we'll get beta access eventually, right?

"that it is still a viable studio" congratulations on ruining the entire message with one poorly conceived phrase

What's wrong with that phrase? It's a direct response to all the "id is dead" talk.

Hmm...It makes me wonder if it was really gameplay footage they were showing at Quakecon, or if it was just more proof of concept footage.

It wasn't anything like you are suggesting. I'm not saying that it means the game will be amazing or anything, but it certainly wasn't concept footage.

If they didn't want it picked apart, then it's not indicative of the final product and was very likely scripted. This happened with the Doom3 leaked alpha. Remember the pinky busting through the pipes?

In the NBA Live 13 cancellation discussion, Brad said this about NBA Elite 11 "christ pose":

Brad: "I heard an amazing behind-the-scenes story about that."
Jeff: "Yeah... Yes. That is an amazing story."
Brad: "...I'm not supposed to repeat it." (laughs)
                    Jeff: "Ummm... "
Ryan: "Well, don't tease it on here, then, you dick!"
Brad: "...I know, I shouldn't have said that..."
                    Jeff: (awkwardly) "...Ummm..."
                    Patrick: "Pullin' a Shane Bettenhausen..."
Ryan: (imitating Shane Bettenhausen) "Oh, I've got this amazing story, I can't tell you..."
                    Jeff: "...it's... it's a really good... anyway"
                    (everyone laughs)
                    Ryan: "FUCK YOU, TOO!"

Going by his thought process, didn't he break the trust of the 'con by recording footage? Couldn't he have been kicked out for it? Why would he record the video if he wasn't planning on sharing it? This all doesn't add up.

One could argue that if you come to a thread where people are asking for footage and say you have footage, it's kinda implied that he owes us.

But he doesn't have footage. He's just fishing for attention, and it sure did work.

Wow, some of you guys are some bitter mother fuckers. I simply stated myself and several others in my area had taken some video, in no way did I ever insinuate that I was going to show it. I just confirmed that people had taken some when it was possible to get away with doing it. As big as this forum is on "respecting" things around here like dancing around piracy, being emotionally sensitive to just about everything, some of you guys sure seem pretty butt hurt . It's just a fucking video of some extremely early gameplay. All you guys would do is shit on it anyway. If you dont like that noone is leaking it for your benefit, please feel free to come to the event instead of bitching at people who did and got to see it.

Perhaps I want to show it personally to my friends? It wont require it getting back around to anyone if im showing it to them in person. Pretty big difference, but should be easily figured out. Then again, that would imply that you understand the socializing in real life thing.

Hines has been in that job for at least 5 years, probably more, and he is a master concocter of PR. Remember the PR windup to masterpieces like Brink, Rogue Warrior and Wet?
