Club Nintendo 2014 'Elite Rewards' released

All digital games, all the time

19

Club Nintendo, the loyalty program that awards points ("coins") for buying and registering hardware and games, has revealed its cumulative Platinum and Gold rewards for this year. In a marked change from the usual, this time all of the rewards are game downloads.

As usual, the rewards are split into two tiers based on cumulative coins earned in the past year. Platinum members get to choose one game from a selection of newer downloadable games, while Gold members get their choice of Virtual Console games. Platinum members could opt for a Gold game if they wish.

Platinum rewards are Game & Wario, NES Remix, Earthbound, Dr. Luigi, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Fluidity: Spin Cycle, Dillon's Rolling Western, and Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move. The Gold rewards are Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, Donkey Kong 3, WarioLand 2, Metroid, and Super Mario Land 2.

Club Nintendo has given digital rewards for its annual promotion before, but also offered physical items like posters and pins. This is the first year that all of the rewards have been game downloads.

Not bad. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is normally $35.

That's probably the most valuable reward, but I already have the game for Wii so I went with EarthBound instead. I've heard great things about EarthBound and I've always wanted to play it someday.

Club Nintendo is a wonderful system that rewards gamers for participating. Last year I bought a 3dsXL and enough games to reach platinum status. I got a couple games along the way, a handsome draw-string pouch to hold my system, and a prize at the end of the year.

The website design is beautiful and refreshing.

The only problem is the system is ripe for exploitation. This could be why the prizes are digital this year.

As the only retail game on the Platinum list, if I didn't have it already, I would get it.

Are these rewards for the year ending June 30th or the year starting July 1st?

Strike that... Just hit platinum today and it said it was for 2014 platinum members so I guess I am a 2015 Platinum.

I'm pretty stoked at the large selection of rewards, even if they are all digital. A physical reward would be nice, but it'd end up on a shelf somewhere eventually. This way it's something I'll actually use.

I'll finally get around to picking up Earthbound now!

Also, the platinum rewards in the past have been much more than just "pins and posters". Ceramic figurines and more have been offered.

Nintendo's giving people free shit and you're complaining? No one forced them to run a rewards program in the first place, you know.

Two of those are subscription services. This is a perk for no subscription. This is on top of the digital promotion that they've already run with the Wii U. So far that's been enough to get me a full price game and I still have credit left.

still though, for what they charge for all their backlog its the least they can do to provide value to the consumer

This seems like a good value to me, and I've been a PS+ subscriber since the start.

Nintendo has been pretty generous between this and the digital promotion. I don't understand people crying over free things not being good enough, but then again I don't like physical goods. Maybe I'd be more annoyed if I wanted a calendar or CD instead of a game.

These digital rewards cost Nintendo practically nothing. They're being cheap.

These rewards aren't free. This is supposed to be your reward for buying and registering a lot of Nintendo products. You're right, no one is forcing them to run a loyalty program. They're free to not run it, and customers are free to buy fewer Nintendo products.

Have you seen what Nintendo of Japan has done in the past? Heck, I was skeptical of NoA's prize last year of the posters but was pleasantly surprised when I actually had it in my hands.

To be fair, Nintendo does claim "Members that earn enough Coins during the Club Nintendo year (July 1 - June 30) to reach Gold or Platinum Elite Status will receive exclusive gifts." I wouldn't call rewards that can be purchased by anyone as exclusive. Sure, it's nice they give rewards to their customers but their marketing makes it sound as if you'll be getting something you cannot get anywhere but Club Nintendo.

Zelda 2 or Metroid are the best options.

I'd say Metroid for sure, of those two options. It's just a more solid game all around, and doesn't require a walkthrough.

I already own some of those gold reward games from the 3DS ambassador program so I picked up Mario Land 2 which was the next best thing I didn't have. I thought about Icarus but I remembered there's a 3D edition of Icarus I can get later on sale or as a reward.
