Next Zelda could include multiplayer

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has implied that the next Legend of Zelda game may include multiplayer in some way. The series has dabbled in multiplayer with the Four Swords games, but the recent comments seem to indicate this would be the case for the next main entry in the franchise, which was shown at E3.

"The two-player functionality of Hyrule Warriors is actually something that has traditionally been done in the Dynasty Warriors series, but they’ve changed because of the hardware and the second screen on your GamePad," Aonuma told Game Informer. "Instead of having a splitscreen on the television, you have one-player playing on the television and one on the GamePad. When I was talking back about making Zelda more than just a single-player experience? That’s something you will see in the future, maybe next year."

Aonuma has been focusing on breaking the similarities between Zelda games, with moves like the item rental shop in A Link Between Worlds. At the E3 reveal of the Wii U Zelda game, he commented that he is focusing on making this a more open world to encourage exploration.
