Tom Francis' Gunpoint is getting somewhat of a new lease on life, thanks to a new patch that offers some significant changes. First and foremost, the stealth puzzle game is getting a whole new engine, courtesy of the folks at Abstraction Games.

With a smooth new engine in place, Gunpoint is also getting Steam Workshop support to make sharing the game's custom levels a lot easier. On that note, some of the editor's bugs have been fixed, including a persistent crash that would pop up whenever multiple elevators are placed in a level.

The new Gunpoint engine is expected to noticeably improve performance and fix a number of issues. Francis adds that the new Gunpoint engine will allow him to develop the game's long-awaited Mac and Linux versions faster, though there's still no timetable for when they will be completed. Abstraction Games, the makers of the new engine, have been credited with a number of ports, having most recently worked on the Vita port for Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I'd love to get more content for that game

So much this. The game was amazingly fun but entirely too short. Left me wanting more, bad. Still, worth my $9.

I'd like it if custom levels could be arranged in a campaign versus one at a time, basically allowing the fans to make expansions of their own. That would really extend the life of the game.

Does the new engine mean OSX support?

Francis did address that. Says that the new engine should make OSX/Linux development easier.

          Woo!

I almost never play anything on Windows anymore, since it requires me to sit by myself in my office for long periods of time and completely ignore my wife. So now I do most of my gaming on my macbook in the living room, if it doesn't support OSX I most likely won't ever play it (unfortunately).

This article is written as if they are going to update it in the future. The new engine and steam workshop support are already in place.

This was one of Gerstmann's games of the year I think. I should add it to my wishlist.
