It was a tight race for the misfortune honor of making the dreaded prestigious cover for the latest Madden NFL game. But we do have a poor, unfortunate soul winner and tonight's edition of ESPN's SportsCenter revealed that Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman would be the latest athlete to grace the cover of this year's Madden NFL 15. Shacknews sends its sincerest condolences congratulations!

Sherman beat out Newton in the final round of voting, beating out a field that included other major NFL stars like Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck and San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick. Over 10 million votes were tallied through the course of the competition, with an average of 650,000 votes counted for each individual voting match-up.

Previous cover athletes included Cleveland Browns RB Peyton Hillis (who played 10 games the next year, due to injury), Baltimore Ravens LB Ray Lewis (who broke his wrist the next season), Philadelphia QB Donovan McNabb (who missed seven games the next season, due to injury, and was never the same), and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu (who suffered separate MCL and PCL injuries during the next season). They also included Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson, who went on to put up record numbers the next season, despite playing with three broken fingers.

With all that said, we wish the new cover athlete the best of luck this upcoming season! Break a leg, champ!

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
