Our collective journey into the culinary world of video games continues, with a sight familiar to those who watched the old Sonic the Hedgehog show where he was voiced by Urkel. Sonic was constantly scarfing down chili dogs, so today's recipe teaches you how to make some Sonic Chili Dogs of your very own. Not to be confused with Sonic chili dogs.

MEASUREMENTS & SERVINGS:

Brown 1 lb ground beef

Add ½ cup each of chopped onions, peppers and mushrooms (brown lightly)

Add 1 large can of crushed tomatoes

Add 8 oz barbecue sauce

Simmer ½ hour

Add 1 teaspoon each of chili powder, cumin, oregano

Add 1 large can red kidney beans (drained)

Simmer 1 hour

Add hot dogs

Cook 15 minutes in sauce

Put on toasted roll

Melted cheese (optional)

YIELD: Makes 6-8 servings

Not to be confused with chili dogs from Sonic the fast food establishment.

This is a pretty good chili-for-chili-dogs recipe. I like that it shows people that chili can in fact be made in a way other than "open can, reheat".

We like that natural stuff here at Shacknews. Real cooks make their own chili!

It's amazing what works in chili. I've had amazing chili that incorporated chocolate AND peanut butter.

I'd skip the mushrooms personally, but that's because my stomach and mushrooms are not best friends.

I don't mind them in chili so much since I support chili freedom, but on a chilidog it's just weird.

For an alternate suggestion, as someone married to a vegetarian, the boca meat crumbles are basically indiscernible from beef when used for chili. Neither of us really like tofu, but veg artisans are getting better and better at imitating meat in pre-packaged ways.

I believe there was a certain chili recipe posted on the chatty which highly discouraged bean use.
