PC gets official Xbox One controller drivers

Microsoft has released official drivers to use Xbox One controllers on PC.

13

Just as promised, you can now officially use your Xbox One controller on PC. The drivers will be coming in a Windows update soon, but you can grab them early and get started.

They're available from the Major Nelson Blog. You can use the XBO controller with any game that's compatible with the Xbox 360 controller. As we get more PC games that appeared on Xbox One, like today's announcement of Dead Rising 3, those are likely to work natively with it as well. The blog notes connecting a USB cord as part of the process, though, so these drivers seem unlikely to work with the existing 360 wireless receiver.

An unofficial solution has been available for a few months, for those users who didn't want to wait for the Microsoft support.

Great to hear, I worried that they would take a really long time to do this.

I might just hold out until there's a wireless option.

Yeah, I didn't catch that. Forget the controller, still getting cheesesteak later.

Same, I'll jump on it when wireless is available.

Same. 360 controller is still good enough until they release one.

How's the D-Pad on One compared to the 360? I'm not seeing much reason to replace it.

It's an improvement but people still complain.

Significantly better than the stock 360 D-Pad. It's about the same as the special edition 360 pads.

Can you only use it in wired/usb mode?

If not, does it work with the 360 wireless receiver?

What are the overall pros/cons of the XB1 controller versus 360?

Way, way better dpad. I could do wall jumps in Super Metroid with the XB1 controller whereas I could not for the life of me get out of the goddamn pit using the 360 pad.

Overall higher quality feeling and hefty weight. Better analog triggers.

I would say the only disadvantage (which you get eventually used to) is that the XB1's analog left joystick is a tad tall, requiring your thumb to stretch a bit to stay on top. The 360's analog joystick height is less strenuous. But I got used to the XB1's taller height.

Also no wireless on the XB1 pad.

this is a killer for me. I use the 360 controller on my htpc and I'd gladly upgrade to an xbone one if it was still wireless

I had heard a lot of people didn't like the shoulder buttons on the new controller but I've never held one. Actually I've never seen an Xbox One besides the one at PAX before it came out - under a glass cabinet.

It's so small, even in my tiny doll hands. They hurt after extended usage.

That's probably because they are pressing the shoulder buttons like buttons with their fingers. You're supposed to just bump them with the trigger fingers never taking your fingers off the trigger.

The new shoulder bumpers are much easier to hit doing it that way and it works very well.

Saying people are holding it wrong is kinda not the right way to look at it though.
Either way I haven't seen so many of these complaints since launch day so I can only guess it ain't so bad after all.

It's more that people assumed doing the same thing before would work the best. I didn't like the new bumpers at first since I used to take my fingers off to press them like the 360 or PS3 controllers but then I took my time studying it and realized the idea of the updated design and it made sense.
