Xbox One dev kits get GPU boost from Kinect removal

Microsoft has announced that the June update to its Xbox One development kits allows more GPU bandwidth, thanks to the recent removal of Kinect.

When Microsoft decoupled Kinect from Xbox One, it hinted that it could boost performance as well. That appears to be happening faster than expected, as Microsoft has confirmed that development kits are getting an increase in graphics processing unit (GPU) bandwidth.

New Xbox head Phil Spencer started the ball rolling by commenting on the change via Twitter. "June #XboxOne software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth," he wrote. "More performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better."

Microsoft later confirmed to Eurogamer that the "up to 10 percent additional GPU performance" is coming from the change to Kinect. Pressed if that would mean developers could hit 60 FPS with 1080p resolution, the company simply stated: "How developers choose to access the extra GPU performance for their games will be up to them.

"The team is continually calibrating the system to determine how we can give developers more capabilities. With this SDK, we will include new options for how developers can use the system reserve as well as more flexibility in our natural user interface reserve (voice and gesture). We'll continue to work closely with developers to help them bring great games to Xbox One.”

          I'm guessing its for gesture recognition so you can do the pinch to close etc. I'd be fine with that being shut off during a non Kinect game - all I really want are the voice commands to stay active.

            Same. I just care about the voice commands really. I wish they would be a little clearer about these always being active.

        I thought we'd see at least a couple interesting kinect games, but nope its DOA. What a catastrophe.

        If Kinect were a Shakespearean play, the acts would probably be:

        I: 2009: Project Natal unveil, Peter Molyneux unveiling Milo
        II: 2010: Kinect name announcement, Dance Central and other games announced at E3, Japanese developed Kinect games announced at TGS
        III: Release day 2010: Kinect Injuries, complaints about hover menus, positive Dance Central reception
        IV: 2012: failure of Kinect Star Wars and Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor; waning of game announcements
        V: 2013-2014: XBox One reversal on Kinect policy, even less Kinect games of substance, Kinect-free SKU.
