New villain slithers into newly-titled Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Dr. Eggman will take a backseat in Sonic's newest game, as a new villain arises in the newly-titled Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

With Sonic is getting a conceptual overhaul for this year's Sonic Boom, it appears that Sega will similarly make some changes to the blue hedgehog's rogues gallery. As such, long-time villain Dr. Eggman will not be the new game's main antagonist, though he will be present. Instead, it'll be a giant snake creature called Lyric. With the slimy serpent taking center stage, the Wii U version of the new game will now go by the full title, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

The Sega blog describes Lyric as "a giant and monstrous snake-like creature from an ancient race. An extremely tech-savvy mastermind who uses a sophisticated robotic body of armor to carry out his own nefarious deeds, he is a formidable enemy and a force to be reckoned with."

While the Wii U version of the game will focus on stopping Lyric's evil machinations, the 3DS version of Sonic Boom (titled Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal) will place more of an emphasis on individual character development. In addition to playing as characters like Sticks, Shattered Crystal will focus more on platforming.

Both Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal are expected to release later this year on Wii U and 3DS, respectively.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Huh I wonder how this will turn out, they seem to be trying something totally new or trying to be a Super Mario 3D World but with as lot of new gameplay.

Hmm we see more at E3 I guess.

Totally which may not be a bad thing, we will see.

It is really odd they just don't make Sonic Generations 2.

Not really. That was a one-and-done thing for Sonic's 20th Anniversary. It was really cool, but it wouldn't make sense to make that specific series a franchise.

It is looking very much Sonic Boom will join Sonic Lost World in the pile of games that I will sure has hell not buy.

Which is a huge shame especially for a guy like me who grew up with playing Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. Damn, Sega used to be so cool and great and look at them now...
