Unreal Tournament 3 PC online play lives on, thanks to Epic

Now that Gamespy's services have become a thing of the past, a number of PC games are no longer playable online. However, Epic is not content with this idea and is fully planning to keep Unreal Tournament 3's online play alive, thanks to a new patch that allows users to play through the game's master server.

However, Epic is not content with this idea and is fully planning to keep Unreal Tournament 3's online play alive, thanks to a new patch that allows users to play through the game's master server.

"We want to be sure you're still able to play Unreal Tournament 3 Multiplayer," reads the announcement on Epic's website. "Thanks to community member Shambler, we have a patch that will allow you to continue playing. We also want to thank all of the server admins and other community members who have helped test the patch to be sure it’s ready to go."

Windows users are instructed to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries and replace the UT3 executable with a new replacement executable provided by the new patch. Steam users are likewise instructed to replace their old executable in their C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries folder with the new one.

Players will need to re-create their user name from scratch, as a side effect of this new approach. Credit goes to Chatty's the archvile for the tip.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

It's an EA title, so of course we will. They categorize the term "user support" the same way you or I categorize the term "dental work without anesthesia".

It's nice to see some game companies showing actual support for the fanbase. Not to mention it's helping establish who will actually support their own games and who never has any intention of doing so.

I'm hoping this can be pushed out as an official Steam update sometime.

Also, Ozzie, the article just lists the Steam folder location twice, instead of listing the non-Steam location and the Steam location. Might want to correct that.
