Mighty No. 9 still looks awfully familiar

Comcept has released more footage of Mighty No. 9, showing off the stages of Mighty No. 2 and 5 (water and artillery-based, respectively).

Mighty No 9 has never exactly hidden its Mega Man influences. It's from the original creator of Mega Man, features an almost identical plot and protagonist to Mega Man, and replicates many of the same mechanics as Mega Man. Even so, seeing it in action always puts into stark relief just how Mega Man this thing really is.

A lengthy bit of work-in-progress gameplay footage shows the stages and a brief glimpse of the boss battles against Mighty No 2 and 5--based on water and heavy artillery, respectively. The footage is a leap ahead of earlier this year off-screen. While it still isn't quite matching the concept art (above), it does appear to be getting closer all the time. It's due next spring.

      I can't stand MN9's 3D aesthetic.

I may be old, but I never got into the whole dashing mega man games...zero were they? It kind of takes a lot of the skill and point out of the platforming.

X1 introduced dash, I believe. From what I recall--and I didn't play much of the X series; I was burned out on MM by the time X got rolling--dashing didn't take much of the skill out of platforming, really. You used it to cross big jumps and often had to use it in tandem with wall climbing and jumping, especially to reach hidden areas. It wasn't needed much, although you could dash through stages if you were attempting a speed run or trying to get to an item or spot you missed the first time around.

dashing started with X. its one of the reasons that the X games had much more varied gameplay, and the platforming was much superior, especially with the smooth wall jumping mechanics.

yeah but X you were still pretty slow and didn't dash far, so it was sort of a glorified slide. What I am talking about is this flash zoom.

I may be in the minority, but I really wish they weren't seeking as much fan input for this game. I feel like the game could end up suffering from the "design by committee" problem. I think Mega Man 2 was great because it was made by like, ten guys that had a vision to make the most kickass platformer they could imagine.

That's what I want to see here. The small collective of artists working their magic to make an impressive old school platformer on the UE3 engine. It does look fun in this video though.

I'm sure Infaune and his team have the experience and acuity to decide when to incorporate fan-made suggestions, and when to pass.

Im sad because as much as i love this, this is not mega man. I've had a love for that character since i was a wee lad, and playing this feels like cheating. :(

Mighty No. 9 is shaping up pretty good. It avoids the flat levels introduced in the later Playstation 1 Mega Man X games. The enemies look like actual robots and not cartoon robots with big cartoony eyes. Thank God he left Capcom. It is clear now that Capcom was killing their Mega Man franchise, not the creator.
