With its Amplitude project successfully meeting its Kickstarter goal--and several other projects in the works, including Disney's Fantasia: Music Evolved--Harmonix appears to be thriving. Unfortunately, today served a reminder that it still has to deal with business realities just like everybody else.

The developer has confirmed that it is laying off 37 employees this week as part of a restructuring. In addition, CEO Alex Rigopulos will be replaced by Steve Janiak, although he will still serve on the team as chief creative officer.

"Harmonix is in the process of restructuring our organization to bring it into alignment with our current and future product development plans," the company said in a statement to Game Informer. "Unfortunately, this means making the difficult decision to reduce the number of full-time staff. We sincerely appreciate the work of each and every one of these employees. Harmonix is working to ensure that those affected are well taken care of as we make this change."

In addition, the company has decided to take its PC music/shooting game Chroma back into re-development. "Based on the terrific feedback we got from all of you in the community, as well as our own analysis, we have concluded that Chroma will need some substantial retooling to be the game we want it to be," stated the rep. "We remain passionately committed to the high-level vision, and we think there are some very successful mechanics and systems in the existing build."

We certainly wish those who got laid off the best of luck in landing on their feet.

Not much of a AAA game development ecosystem in the Boston anymore, now that 38 Studios and Irrational have shut down, and Harmonix has scaled back. Turbine's still doing Infinite Crisis and LOTR:O stuff, but that seems like an outlier.

..in the Boston area, I should say. There's still an indie development gathering, though.
