New Mortal Kombat teased with promo poster

A new Mortal Kombat game could be right around the corner.

For the past few days, Mortal Kombat producer Ed Boon has been teasing the announcement of a new fighting game, which will take place on June 2nd. While some of his hints have been less than subtle, some new promotional material has surfaced that seems to indicate that we'll be seeing another entry in the bloody fighting franchise sooner rather than later. A post on Reddit (via NeoSeeker) shows a promotional poster featuring a dislodged spinal cord in an x-ray--along with the words "Who's next?" and the traditional Mortal Kombat dragon logo. That definitely implies that Boon and his team at Netherrealm are, in fact, returning to Outworld for another round of over-the-top fatalities and carnage-inducing fighting.

That's...gotta hurt

In response to the leak, Boon cheekily joked, "I don't suppose there's anything I can do to make you think we still MIGHT be announcing Injustice 2 in #five days is there…?" The last mainstream Mortal Kombat game to make the rounds was three years ago, in 2011, when the modern reboot arrived on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It was a critical success, so it's no surprise that another may be coming.

MK9 is absolutely the best fighting game that I've ever played. The story mode kept a continuous cheesy grin on my face, I want more!!

Same here. It hit the right balance of accessibility (MK's calling card) and deep, fun fighting systems that hardcore fighting fans could sink their teeth into.

Considering that MK9 managed to do a fighting game story that wasn't all text, I'm looking forward to what they do with the story mode in the next MK.

But I kinda don't at all mind seeing MK with the tweaks we see in Injustice gameplay. =\

Injustice came out last April and DLC came out all the way through August, so it still feels pretty fresh.

Injustice gets good tourney numbers and, along with the casuals, it was also designed with the tournament crowd in mind. They had a good number of pro fighters test on the game prior to its release.

Man, I need to look up some Injustice tourney matches on YouTube. I kinda forget that game exists because I'm ambivalent toward superhero stuff.

To be fair, you're not missing too much. It was pretty unbalanced for a good while to the point that the Evo Grand Finals for Injustice was just Superman spamming heat vision.

Yea Superman was ridiculous for a while. Then Scorpion came out and he became the go-to ridiculous dude until he got nerfed. I have no idea who is top tier now, I haven't really watched any Injustice streams since Evo.

It's gotten a lot better though. Characters that were useless before are now top tier like Lobo / Flash. I'm not really big into the game, but I think NRS has kind of stuck with it for a little bit to get it into decent shape. I much prefer Capcom based movement and fighting/combos but it's a decent game.

Just please bring back the COOP Tag 2v2 modes. Jesus Christ those modes are awesome to play online (and offline!). I was really disappointed when it was omitted in Injustice.

That mode makes it one of the ultimate party games.

i FUCKING LOVE mk9. It had the most enjoyable storyline of any game ive played in a long time. I hope they pick right up where it left off, and pull no punches with the storyline again.

I also played about 2000 matches or so online, which is a staggering achievement because i really dont like fighting games at all, and i even watched several tournaments and shit, which is another big deal because if there is anything i like less than playing fighters, its watching them. MK9 really sucked me in.
