Operation Supply Drop charity drive hit with DDoS attack

Operation Supply Drop is in the middle of their 8 Bit Salute charity drive for overseas troops this week. Unfortunately, the site that takes donations has been hit with a concentrated DDoS attack and is not expected to recover until the event is over.

Operation Supply Drop, a charity organization dedicated to offering video game care packages to overseas military troops in active combat or recovering from battle in hospital zones, is in the middle of their annual 8 Bit Salute charity drive this weekend. Unfortunately, the main website that takes donations from viewers of various charity streams from across the Twitch world has been hit with a DDoS attack and is not expected to recover until the event is over.

"Well, that took 26 minutes, but the Operation Supply Drop website is already down," reads the Operation Supply Drop Facebook page (via Joystiq).

While streams remain active, people can no longer donate directly through the Operation Supply Drop website. In an effort to skirt the DDoS attackers, the charity organization is asking donors to send money directly to their PayPal account.

Operation Supply Drop was founded in 2010 by retired Army Captain Stephen "Shanghai Six" Machuga. Over $750,000 worth of games and gear has been raised for active-duty troops since the organization's inception. Among its many positive contributions has been helping soldiers use video games to fight the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
