April NPD: Xbox One still in second as price drop looms

The NPD charts show little change over last month, but NPD says that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are cumulatively outperforming their predecessors.

Sony and Microsoft continue their graceful dance of console launch wars. Sony emerged the victor in April for the fourth time in a row, with PlayStation 4 taking the top spot. But, Microsoft finished in second with Xbox One. This is all before the impending price drop in June, of course, when we may see a shake-up.

Whatever the case in relation to each other, both consoles are cumulatively outpacing their predecessors. According to the data, the first six months of PS4 and Xbox One have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and Xbox 360 during their own first six months. Hardware grew 76% over last year, driven by console sales which increased a whopping 120%.

Software wasn't quite as healthy, with a slight dip at a 10% decline. Even so, PS4 and XBO software sales are up 40% compared to PS3/360 software in its first six months. Wii U software is up 80% over last year too. Titanfall continued to hold the top spot, but the top sales figures on the whole only have a couple of licensed games as new releases.

NPD specified that five games were in the top 10 in terms of raw sales, but fell out of the listings once platforms were combined. Those were Yoshi's New Island, Infamous: Second Son, MLB 14: The Show, Kinect Sports Rivals, and Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. Ranking them by combining all the versions tends to cut out platform exclusives, in other words.

Every month, for the next 10 years at a minimum, we get to read about Sony and Microsoft whipping out their members, measuring them, and sharing those measurements with the world. Joy.

(No offense to you, Steve. You're one of my favorite Shack writers. I just hate that monthly NPD numbers are considered news.)

What else are the fanboys going to use to determine which one is going to go away though?

Let's not forget Sony (as a company) is expected to have a loss again THIS year. That to me means more than how many PS4s they sell. If the whole company has to go under restructuring that can't bode well for the gaming division.

The PS4 8 million sold presser must be around the corner also. I look forward to the day that Sony does not report every million sold.

brand new 500 dollar box that cant do mainstream 1080p, there's problems way beyond a silly camera, seems like such a waste(goes for you as well ps). Besides, all/most of the releases are coming out for the old boxes too, not much reason for the average gamer to pick these up.

I'm getting kind of tired of reading all these headlines about how MS is "ditching Kinect" and instituting a "price drop".

They're not. They're offering a second Xbone SKU that doesn't include Kinect for $100 less. They will continue to offer the $500 model with Kinect just like they've always done. Kinect is not being terminated, and they're not lowering the price at all on existing hardware.

I know it's pretty pedantic but the way the games media has been covering this is annoying me.

That's because your point is pedantic. They are ditching their no compromise stance on Kinect.

That's ditching the Kinect, since this is the company that repeatedly said that would never happen, and it was integral to the system. That's ditching.

And yes, it's a price drop. It's a drop from $500 to $400. Just like it was a price drop when they were selling $500->$450 for a few weeks. Everyone in the industry knows what's happening.
