Microsoft to offer refunds on Gold subscriptions

Microsoft is offering pro-rated refunds on Gold subscriptions that are canceled after the June update removes the streaming services paywall.

Bundled alongside yesterday's announcement of a Kinect-free Xbox One was confirmation of earlier reports that the company would be dropping the Gold requirement for streaming services. But what if you bought Gold just for those services? Microsoft has announced it will be offering partial refunds.

In a support FAQ (via Game Informer), Microsoft explains how it will work. You'll need to cancel your Gold subscription, thus proving that you don't really need it anymore, but that will net you a pro-rated refund on whatever time you have remaining. The offer only extends through August 31, 2014, and of course, trial Gold memberships aren't eligible. The offer will only be available after the system updates in June, so don't rush to do it now if you want some money back.

Wait, does this mean that if I want streaming services for the PS4 (don't own one), I would have to pay for playstation plus? But I don't have to continue my gold subscription to keep my xbox360 Netflix streaming? Holy Crap. That's quite a reversal. I don't play multiplayer on the console, and that's actually one of the main reasons I was more likely to buy a PS4 whenever my 360 craps out. Wow.

the ps4 doesn't require PS+ for streaming services, and now neither does the xbox 360 or 'bone

I think Microsoft is both working hard to get back on top and Sony is enjoying its current leadership position. If this works well enough PS+ requirement will likely get dropped too (unless Sony is just too broke).
