Why Sunset Overdrive is an Xbox One exclusive

Sunset Overdrive's co-creators talk about the vital piece that led to the game's status as an Xbox One exclusive.

After sticking with Sony for so long, Insomniac's hop to multiplatform with Fuse made sense. But its announcement of Sunset Overdrive as an Xbox One exclusive naturally raised questions. CEO Ted Price even addressed that room-dwelling elephant in the original announcement by specifically pointing out that the studio is still open to make games for Sony platforms. But still: why is Sunset Overdrive only on Xbox One?

The answer comes down to Microsoft letting the studio own the property. Insomniac grew tired of creating franchises that it didn't own, so it was keen on keeping its creations.

"We pitched it a few different places, and it was really important to [Insomniac CEO] Ted [Price] that we own the IP, so some of the conversations broke down over that," co-creator Marcus Smith told IGN. "With Microsoft, they just came in very energetic and excited to work with Insomniac, period. And we'd heard some really good things about them and some resources that they would be allowing us to have."

Drew Murray, the other creative head on the project, agreed. "Most publisher conversations begin and end with IP ownership," he said, "and I think [Microsoft] has been talking to Ted for a while, and at some point it was like, 'you can retain the IP,' and suddenly, it was a conversation point."

Of course completely unsaid is "Microsoft paid them a ridiculous amount of money and..." before the "let them keep the IP".

Since cross-platform games are so very common, the only reason they'd go exclusive is for moneyhats.

Letting them keep the IP kind of is equivalent to MS paying them a ridiculous amount of money. I'm not saying they didn't necessarily pay them money atop that, but IP rights are a pretty big thing.

You can retain the IP? What good does that do if the first one is XBONE exclusive? We have too many games where only the second game comes out on your console of choice. Just admit it was because of money and be done with it.

HAHAHAHAHA! I don't even plan on getting an x1, but so many butthurt fanboys.
Insomniac wants to make an awesome game that requires a decent budget (ie, a publisher)
        Goes to Sony, "no"
        Go to Activision, "no"
        Fuck EA because of Fuse
        Go to MS, "yes"
The big deal is that by someone else owning the property, they call the shots on what can and can't be put into the game. Sure it's ecksbawcks exclusive, but they're making it how they want to make it.

You are kidding right? these guys pitched the game to Sony and they weren't interested unless they gave their IP rights to them, I applaud them for going with another more supportive publisher even if it means I won't be playing their game any time soon since I don't own an XBO.

Hope it works out for them, so if it's good it comes to other platforms.

Yeah, because what artist in their right mind wants to actually retail ownership and control of something that they create? The nerve of them.

We get to keep the IP and in return get fewer sales from the gaming community.

Interesting collection of comments so far. It sounds like everyone is accusing Insomniac of accepting a pile of cash. If this story were in reverse it would absolutely include statements about "FU Microsoft for trying to control other people's creations!"

It's weird because ofcourse they accepted money. They need it, they asked for it, that's what a pitch is. They went to all the companies that could give them that money and then chose the one that made the least bad demands in return.
