Nintendo has announced it will introduce its own line of near-field communication figurines, similar to Skylanders. The figures of popular Nintendo characters will work across different games, for both Wii U and 3DS.

After trying it to a smaller extent with Pokemon Rumble U, Nintendo is making a move into the near-field communication market to produce game toys like Skylanders and Disney Infinity. During a financial briefing, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that NFC figurines that interact with the company's own games will launch this year.

The briefing showed slides with a Mario figurine as an example. The idea, according to Iwata, is to have the figurines work with multiple games. Wii U has NFC functionality built in, and Nintendo will be introducing a 3DS NFC base for cross-compatibility with it too. The 3DS base is scheduled to launch next year. Nintendo promises more details to come at E3.
