Don't Starve getting multiplayer this summer

Remember when Chatty asked Klei about adding Don't Starve to multiplayer and their stance was a definitive no? The studio has changed their minds and multiplayer will hit Don't Starve this summer with the new Don't Starve Together expansion.

Let's take a quick trip back in time to July 2013, when Shacknews spoke to Klei about the wilderness survival game, Don't Starve. Some of our Chatty posters asked the studio about multiplayer, to which Klei Community Manager Corey Rollins stated "wasn't something that was a fit for our vision and purpose of the game."

A lot has changed since then and that includes Klei's stance on multiplayer. The studio has announced that multiplayer will indeed be coming to Don't Starve late this summer with an expansion appropriately titled Don't Starve Together.

Don't Starve Together will allow players to band together in public or private online matches and attempt to brave the wilderness in teams of 2 to 4. It will feature all of the game's standalone features, all of which are balanced for a multiplayer setting.

"As we developed Don't Starve, multiplayer slowly turned into a hot button issue in the community," Klei's JoeW explained in the developer forums. "Ok, let's face it... it was always a hot button issue. A lot of people have voiced their feelings that multiplayer would be perfect in Don't Starve. However, at the time we didn’t have the resources to make it happen and we weren't confident that it would actually work both in concept and implementation."

Don't Starve Together is expected to arrive this summer on PC (with a possible Steam Early Access pitstop) and will be free to current owners of the game. However, because of how much extra work needs to go into adding and maintaining these new features, the base price of Don't Starve will increase to $19.99 once the multiplayer update goes into alpha. No word on whether the expansion will hit the game's PS4 version.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

RoG DLC was fantastic, but this announcement I did not see coming. I thought they were going to do it with a squeal instead of the original game. It's still excellent new s though.; especially with it getting tacked on the original game without any extra charge.
