League of Legends is among the most popular eSports, and has been driving the push to make it resemble real sports as much as possible. It already holds championships in major venues, and helped pro-players become recognized as athletes by the US government. The next logical step? Featuring the best players in a splashy hype-trailer, of course.

The "All-Star 2014" trailer highlights each of the five top regional teams preparing to take part in the All-Star Invitational this weekend. It kicks off tomorrow in Paris and runs through Sunday, featuring teams from North America, Europe, Korea, Southeast Asia, and China. The winning team will receive $50,000, plus a bit of national pride.

It's going to be interesting to see how this event goes.

SKT K (they won the world championship last year) are probably the best team at the event, but they're currently about the fourth or fifth best team in Korea and have been in a bit of a slump lately as they were knocked out of the OGN playoffs in the first round (they barely even made it, they had to beat their sister team SKT S to make it in) and then lost to CJ Entus Frost in NLB, which is like the Korean challenger league. They are still the favorites in this tournament, though, and Faker (their midlaner) is probably the best player in the world at any position.

OMG, the Chinese team, have been absolutely wrecking LPL (the Chinese league) and might be the only team that can realistically challenge SKT K. The problem for OMG is that the Chinese meta is incredibly weird, focuses very heavily on early game, and likely sets them up poorly for international competition. OMG is still very good and is my second favorite team in the tournament.

The western teams, Cloud 9 and Fanatic, are both capable of taking maybe one game out of five against SKT K. It's not that their bad (both are actually very good, especially when compared to the other Western teams). Cloud 9 has been on a big upswing so I can see them performing well, although Fanatic has been their kryptonite internationally.

The other teams are all basically also-rans and I don't see them competing at a meaningful level.
