Halo's Release

by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 11, 2000 2:18pm PDT

There's a story about the release of Bungie's Halo on Inside Mac Games. According to info from Apple, Halo will be released for Microsoft's X-box and the Mac OS simultaneously, and not with the X-box first as may have been thought. No word on the PC release, but you'd think it would be the same time as well.
update Matt sends word of this update on Halo Vault

I think this "announcement" is the product of some overzealous copywriting over at Apple, or at least someone with only vague memories of what was said on stage at the Expo.

As far as I know, we can't guarantee a simultaneous release on all platforms right now. I wish it were otherwise. If it happens, you'll hear it from us, not from Apple eNews.

  • Here is where I think 'Halo' has been and where it is going...

M$ got such a 'shitstorm' over pissed off gamers about the possibility that 'Halo' would be an X-box exclusive that they started developing a separate game based on the same 'halo engine'.

Halo was going to the the 'Tribes' of Bungie.... a sleeper hit... but the quality of the game demonstrations impressed WAY too many people... and obviouly some ppl at MicroSoft.... ;)

The game Halo will be simutainiously (try spelling that when drunk ;) on the X-box, PC, and Mac. The 'gore level' will be an option on the 'puter platforms and NOT an option on the X-box.

Now. My personal thoughts about HALO and about what it should be..

    1) Server based... the 'net model of Quake and its independent servers is the best model. Support for the independent servers is CRITICAL for Halo's success.

    2) The Servers should be CLEARLY labed by skill levels.... ex. newbie, moderate, experienced, bad mofos', ect. ;)

3)The Servers should also be identified as LOW ping or HIGH ping... and the Servers should have the ability to set paramaters accordingly.

    Just thinking about Halo.... sorta...

Play RA3 if you got the skillz.... I have 'em good enough to compete...

  • Well, that's too bad about Halo..... I'm definitely not going to run out and buy an X-Box just because Halo's coming out for it; same with a Macintosh. I'm more likely to buy a PSX2 and keep upgrading my box as usual.

I'd buy PSX2, if at all, because it's a proven platform whose licensees have turned out quality material in the previous version (PSX). I haven't been a fan of either Sega or Nintendo since the 16-bit versions of each, at which point I discovered PC gaming and never looked back. And Metal Gear Solid looks quite impressive..... not that Halo doesn't, but it's coming out for a system that I _care_ about.

We'll see..... the X-Box might be dope, but I'm not buying into the hyper as readily as Redmond or Bungie might like.
