ASUS SeeThrough Poll
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 11, 2000 8:06am PDTI don't know how long this has been up already, but it's still important. ASUS has a poll on their page asking gamers and developers about what they think of the ASUS SeeThrough drivers, even explaining how it can help gamers. This will help them decide whether to release the drivers or not. Since the drivers were already unofficially leaked this will only bring it to an even larger audience. If you're not totally up to date on these special drivers by ASUS read this story.
Benefits of SeeThrough TechnologiesI'd say that single objection far outweighs any of the "benefits". Thanks Sujoy @ XSReality.
- To help novice players to have a faster learning curve in playing 3D games
- To let skilled players to have a chance to test their skills with a new challenge
- To help users become familiar with 3D graphics rendering
- To save the time of developers for developing and fixing 3D graphics
Objections against SeeThrough Technologies
- It may be used as a cheating aid when playing online games

I think ASUS is trying to get more business by appealing to all the losers out there. Having hardware that makes wires models and see through textures is one of the most idiotic things I've seen in awhile. Good thing I have a creative annihlator, and good thing ASUS can suck my left nut.
<sarcasm>THANKS ASUS!</sarcasm>

If you cheat, you cheat, there's nothing to stop that.
The only thing I would object to is if you used this in a serious tourney or something. I mean, at LANparties you can see the players screen, so it's not hard to see that they are cheating.
This isn't a giant deal or anything, I just don't understand why everyone is getting their panties in a twist over something stupid like this.
But I don't think it would help a begining FPS player or anything. It would be more useful to map makers and such. But whatever.

this is not the fault of the game coders or them being 'lazy' with their rendering code. i certainly wouldnt be pissed off at game coders for making their 3d engines as fast as possible.
clipping the surfaces at the exact point of drawing is not always (and usually not, at least given the current architectures/drivers) the fastest solution.
however i think the latest powervr (!) card is doing something new in this direction but that is a change on the hardware architecture side and not due to 'lazy' game programmers changing anything.
ok im off to jet ski all day.. ill hang around for the next 20minutes or so. :)

This is bad, BUT, it will also have the effect of forcing coders to finally get smart. I've said this before, but instead of trusting a client to clip early, the server shouldn't tell the client where players/items are until they NEED TO KNOW. Rather than be lazy about it, the only time they need to know, is when a player/thing is actually entering their field of view. More accurately (netcode issues), when the object could be in the someone's line of sight in (player1ping/2 + player2ping/2)ms based on last known vectors.
(I'm no expert, but I play one on TV!)

They are already out. Officially releasing them will let everybody get them and make the other videocard companies come out with similar drivers.
If everybody has the same cheat is it still cheating? I don't think so...
