This year's Skylanders game has been revealed. From series creator Toys for Bob, Skylanders Trap Team's new gimmick revolves around capturing your foes for use in battle. It'll be available on October 5 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. In addition to the standard new Skylanders figures, it will include a special "Trap Masters" figures who come with traps. Once you defeat a villain, you can capture it with one of the traps and have it stored to its own NFC widget. Each can only hold one badguy, and the traps are aligned with the elements, so you'll probably have to collect extras. Once you capture a villain (including series arch-villain Kaos) you can use them in battle. The announcement also mentions a new "Traptanium" portal, which presumably means that last year's portals once again will not work. As previously reported, this Skylanders game will be handled by Toys for Bob, the studio behind the original game. It's also the one that will house a fan-named Skylander in a contest that is ongoing. The next phase is to reveal the semi-finalists. "With Skylanders Trap Team, we're no longer just letting kids bring their toys to life inside the game anymore," Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said, in the announcement. "This time, we're letting them pull their toys out of the game as well. We are confident this installment of Skylanders will once again redefine what's possible at the intersection of the physical and virtual worlds."
