CCP's World of Darkness MMO canceled

Today, CCP has announced that it has canceled World of Darkness, and will be cutting 56 jobs from its Atlanta studio. "The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I've ever had to make," CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said in a statement.

CCP has been teasing its World of Darkness MMO for years now--since 2006, in fact. Based upon Vampire: The Masquerade, the game would have players controlling vampires in a dark, modern world filled with mages, werewolves, and other creatures.

While the team was significantly reduced in 2011, CCP explained that the MMO "lives on," requiring more development time "before dedicating the substantial resources required to bring this experience to market." Last year, CCP confirmed that 70 people were working on the game, still in "pre-production" at the time.

Today, CCP has announced that it has canceled World of Darkness, and will be cutting 56 jobs from its Atlanta studio. "The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I've ever had to make," CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said in a statement to GI.biz. "I have always loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in that universe, and over the years I've watched the team passionately strive to make that possible. I would like to give special thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the World of Darkness MMO a reality, especially the team members affected by this decision. Their considerable contribution to CCP will not be forgotten, and we wish them well."

"To our current and former employees and fans of World of Darkness, I am truly sorry that we could not deliver the experience that we aspired to make. We dreamed of a game that would transport you completely into the sweeping fantasy of World of Darkness, but had to admit that our efforts were falling regretfully short. One day I hope we will make it up to you," he added.

I guess I had just assumed this was never going to actually happen. At least they cancelled it instead of releasing something shitty.

This is always the smart play. Better to be up-front that it's just missing the mark and you can't find the right 'secret sauce' to make it work.
