There are details of AMD's new Sledgehammer CPU on AMD Zone (full details are in a PDF file though). The Hammer is AMD's first 64 bit processor, and will at first be used for servers. CPU Review has their own article, which has a better overview of AMD's plans based on a presentation. Anand at AnandTech also has his say about AMD's new processor.

I know someone who got a summer job and blew 6k$ .AU on a ppro setup.
This is like owning the LATEST cpu - only the XEON model.

It's about time. I'd stay away from a "server" CPU for a bit though until it comes to the desktop.

Can you say Pentium Pro? Can you say Xeon? I knew you could.
